About this bottle

Redwood Empire's 2022 Cask Strength Lost Monarch is a limited edition bottling from their core range, presented uncut and unfiltered. This "ryebon" expression combines straight rye (55% rye, 94% rye, 5% malted barley, 1% wheat) and straight bourbon (45% bourbon, 74% corn, 20% rye, 4.5% malted barley, 1.5% wheat). The components were aged between three and 14 years in 53-gallon, char #3 barrels. Maturation in California's fog belt results in a cask strength of 117.2 proof, lower than comparable offerings. This bottling became available nationwide in October 2022 for $70.

Wilburn Whipple 4.3

Copper color. On the nose, I detect cinnamon apples, vanilla ice cream, caramel drizzle, and a hint of wintergreen. The mouthfeel is substantial and warm. On the palate, I get black tea, toasted cinnamon stick, spearmint leaves, and a touch of coffee. The finish is medium-long, with more black tea and spearmint, alongside cinnamon, clove, and some black pepper. The bottle indicates it's at least 3 years old, but it tastes significantly older.

Marco Morrow 4.3

The aroma presents apricot, raspberry, and rye spice alongside vanilla, oak, and a black tea essence. Despite what the expert review suggested, there's a lot to perceive. The taste offers spicy cinnamon, cherry, cloves, and apple pie, complemented by wood, vanilla, and pepper. A few drops of water soften it. The lengthy finish is characterized by baking spices, with mint emerging to impart a savory quality. Quite enjoyable.

Fernando Dorn 4.3

Surprisingly enjoyable! Offers additional flavors like graham cracker, toasted marshmallow, and baking spices. Quite pleasant and a good purchase for the price.

Lupe Bliss 4.5

Initially sweet, with hints of apple and a finish of clove and cinnamon spice.

Gunnar Mccoy 4.0

Chocolate notes at the start, smooth for 117 proof and young. Flavorful.

Marla Story 4.3

It has a nice weight; adding water helps. An enjoyable drink.
